My Gateway Windows Vista Disk Is Scratched But I Have A Non Gateway Version Of Xp. Can I Use That?
when I use the xp disk I get a blue screen and a PCI.SYS error message and it stops

I’m assuming that you trying to boot off the XP disk? If so it will not work. If you know some one with a Vista Disk, you can boot off that. Most computers sold today have a “back up partition” that you could then re-install from.
If you are wanting to change from Vista to XP you will need to format the hardrive (wipe everything off) and install XP.
since your computer is vista do not use any other program that is not computable with it it can crash your system there are other ways of getting information if you can get the Internet you go to the gateway web site and download the program it should be free or if you have a warranty you can get a replace disk i to have a vista but mine is dell system or smiler.
Don’t use Vista it sucks XP is better.If the XP CD is a genuine CD that came with a key wipe your computer. Use DBAN to wipe it http://dban.sourceforge.net/.After that insert and begin to install Windows XP soon there should be a blue screen that needs you to format before you install with then format the drive and let it do the rest.
