How Can I Get This Tricky Malware Off My Computer?

Yesterday, my computer began flashing that horrible Personal Antivirus trojan. It told me I had hundreds of viruses, worms, and other crap… and please, download our wonderful Personal Antivirus program to get rid of them all! I knew better, and tried to close it out, but it kept reappearing… During this time, my web browser and several other programs also refused to start.
I restarted a couple of times, which seemed to solve the problem. But later, I noticed that my Internet browser (Google Chrome) was experiencing some weird effects as well. Sometimes, when I clicked links, it would take me to a page I didn’t intend to visit… A page filled with ads. The only way to successfully navigate the web was to copy the link address and paste it into the URL bar. Again I restarted, which seemed to more or less solve the problem… Though it recurs every now and then.
Now, every time I boot my computer, it shows me a dialog about Google Installer encountering a problem and needing to close, and do I want to send an error report. This usually happens two to five times every time I start, and appears additionally every few minutes… When I follow the link for More Information after sending the error report, it takes me to a Microsoft page about a malware called UACd.sys with some websites with suggested solutions. However, I have attempted all of these and it does not appear to me that the virus I have is in fact UACd.sys. It could be a related one, but I don’t think anything with that name exists on my computer… I’ve looked high and low for it.
My antivirus program, AVG, didn’t recognize any threats when I ran it. Spybot would not run either, no matter how many times I tried. I also downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware after seeing several websites suggest it, but for some reason I am not able to run the installation file. I suspect this is also related to my virus.
My computer has frozen several times during this adventure, and I have often resorted to pulling the plug to get it to reboot…
I am running Windows XP SP3 Tablet Edition on an HP TC1100.
Any help at all would be very, very appreciated. I don’t have a lot of technical experience with computers, but I know how most things work… Making any instructions or suggestions as explicit as possible would therefore be very helpful :)
Thank you so much for your time

Remove any Virus protection already installed.
Start > Control Panel > System > System Restore > Turn off system restore…. These will be infected and most security programs are prohibited from getting in here by microsoft.
DL and run in this order:http://www.malwarebytes.comhttp://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUB…
(instructions here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix… )http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng… Home Edition, FREE
(During the install, it will ask about a BOOT time scan, yes)

    First disable system restore.
next reboot and go into Safe Mode by tapping F8
now run Malwarebytes in quick scan and remove all malware.
go back to normal mode and restore System Restore.

Restart your computer. Right when it’s turning on, hold F8 (boots computer in safe-mode) Then install malwarebytes anti-malware, and run it. Also run AVG, and spybot. Thiswill take a while, but is bound to find the virus. If you need further assistance, i’d be glad to help you
