Portal Game Lags Then Crashes On First Level? Hl2.exe Error?

My copy of Portal crashes when i go through the first portal on my laptop.
I cleaned out my drivevs of clutter so i have plenty of available memory.
I have almost 1gb (.99 to be exact) of RAM and am running off of a 1.73 GHz processor with Windows Vista as my operating system. I dont know how to tell whatt kind of graphics card i have or whether it is above or below the necessary standard for the game. Also, i’ve heard that McAfee antivirus can effect the game. I have McAfee. Could that be the problem?

    It’s probably the graphics, Portal needs 128 mb dedicated memory and it can’t be your processor or ram. And McAfee can’t affect anything in Portal. Just buy a 128 or higher MB card.

    Im not to sure about the Mcafee but if it isnt that it could also be the disc. I have had some games where it just wouldnt run and i exchanged the disc for a new one and it worked perfectly.
