I just took an older computer with windows 98 on it and put 2000 on it.Now when i try to open certain programs like .dll files and things like that,i get a box that pops up and says “open with” and it lists a few programs that came with 2000,like note pad, internet explorer, a few other basic programs, and a few basic programs/software that i just added myself. When i get the “open with” box i click on just about every thing thats in there and still cant open it.Is there a program that i need to download so i can use these programs? Also, now that i put windows 2000 on this comp,it has basically nothing on it,not even “java runtime environment”.What are some basics that i should get?I already added java, quicktime, and a few others, what else should i get? Thanks!

First of all, you shouldn’t be opening .dll files. Those are “Dynamic Link Library” files and contain compiled code. If you try to open it with anything, it will be mostly jumble. If you really want to see whats in it, open it using a text file, like wordpad.
What you can do is view the properties. That will give you some information, such as which program is associated with it, or who the developer is.
Its in general a bad idea to mess with dll files, because if you change even a few bytes in the file, the entire thing can stop working.
Whenever you get that ‘open with’ list, usually the only thing you can do that will give you at least some clue to what it is is with a text viewer like word pad. That will force any data that can be translated as text to be viewed. Also, try to think what the most obvious type of program would be to open those types of files. If you try to open, say, an html document with a picture program like photoshop, its gonna have NO idea what to do with the data. You must open a .html document with a browser for it to render, or a text editor to see the markup language.
As for other programs to install on your computer, I recommend installing
- Macromedia Flash, for many flash movies
- Firefox, for well-rendered webpages
- Google desktop, for google-like desktop searching (SO much better/faster than the windows search…)
- AdAware, for getting rid of spyware programs
- Audio/Video codecs, for viewing video and sound files, I recommend OGG, XVID, and XDIV
- RealPlayer (the basic, free version) for viewing video files with extension .RM
Please read the link in my sources for more details!
Go to filext.com to find out the software u need.
A DLL (Dynamic-link library) file is a compiled library or program. A DLL is not like a document, you can not open it and read the contents but a program called Resource Hacker will yet read and change some dll. if you make any changes, you will corrupt it
